LIA Pramuka students at Vocabulary Computer Competition

Last Friday of 13 August, Universitas Pelita Harapan held UPH Festival to welcome their new students. UPH also held several competitions and one them was Computer-based Vocabulary Competition or VocCom. Nine LIA Pramuka students were sent to represent LIA Pramuka in this competition. Those brilliant students are RIFQI  MIFTAH ARDHI, YANUAR RIANSYAH EFFENDI, STEPHEN SUTANDI, TATIA CHAIRUNNISA, PUTRI MAHARANI PRASSETIO, M.DARHAN MAULUDI, GREGORIUS ROAN ANDRIANTO, and INDAH CHAIRUNNISA. They were mentored by Mr. Safari, one of the Academic Section Heads at LIA Pramuka.

After we re-registered ourselves, we met Dr. Hananto who explained to us how this competition worked.

At first, we were gathered in a computer lab to try out the program. Here, the 9 participants from LIA Pramuka got to know the program. They enjoyed the vocabulary games created by Dr. Hananto. In the first level of this game, the participants were given some incomplete words or words with missing letters. After that they had to provide the missing letters so that the word will make sense. After they had provided the missing letters, they had to choose the meaning of that word from the list provided. If they were successful in the first level, they moved on to the more difficult parts including more difficult English words with more missing letters.

After the practice, all of the participants including those from other schools were ushered to 4 different rooms. Each room was filled with 16 participants. LIA Pramuka’s participants were separated into 3 rooms. They had to compete with other participants from other schools. Sometimes, it was not the brain or knowledge of the words that succeeded them, but the luck. Yes, luck, because sometimes a participant got a very easy word but other times she got a difficult word. Besides, confidence and calmness also played important role. One participant even forgot how to fill in the missing letters in the word ‘SHIRT’ because she was so nervous.

At the end, the nine participants from LIA Pramuka didn’t win the competition. However, we were proud that they could beat their opponents until the big 6 in each room. When we went home, the participants got valuable experience, knowledge, and confidence. Next year, we would come again to UPH VocCom and perhaps we would win!
